About Us

NFI North is a private non-profit human service agency specializing in community-based care for children, youth, adults, and families with emotional, behavioral and educational needs. Established in 1974, the parent agency, North American Family Institute(NAFI), grew out of a need to create alternative services for youth who had been sent to state institutions for unruly and delinquent behavior and for adults institutionalized within the state mental health system. NFI North was incorporated in 1992 to develop community-based services for children, youth, adults and families within New Hampshire and Maine. We have grown to have over 20 programs and over 300 employees in the two states.

NFI North emphasizes a non-institutional approach to treatment in order to decrease institutional values and dependency. NFI North programs become part of the community by utilizing local resources and participating in community activities. An element of the NFI North mission is concentrating on teaching social and survival skills. Consumers learn to develop the attitudes necessary for community living and attain skills necessary for gaining employment.
