Statement of Purpose

According to established procedures, cleans and services building area. Moves furniture, equipment, and supplies, in and around the hospital departments and performs a variety of environmental services duties to maintain the hospital in a neat, orderly, and sanitary condition.

Floors are to be kept up to set standards in all areas. Performs minor maintenance functions.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs critical mechanical component rounds/checks every two hours.
  • Selects cleaning materials and supplies and prepares solutions according to procedure. Loads service cart and transports to work area.
  • Requests cleaning supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Operates various types of cleaning equipment both mechanical and electrical, (i.e. buffers, wringers, scrubbers, vacuums, wet & dry vac, extractor).
  • Cleans stairwells, elevators, and baseboards.
  • Washes walls, windows, and furniture.
  • If required to talk while cleaning infant's room, speaks softly.
  • Encourage child to communicate if circumstances permit, conduct cleaning duties in a friendly manner.
  • Talk to adolescent patient in a friendly and reassuring manner.
  • Communicate with geriatric patient in a friendly and reassuring manner; be aware of physical problems like poor eyesight or loss of hearing when communicating with patient. Cleans equipment and notifies manager of equipment needing repair. Report safety hazards to manager.
  • Returns unused supply to janitor closet; cleans carts and ensures all items are replaced in an orderly manner.
  • May be required to climb ladders, lift windows in and out, or be called to assist maintenance in heavy duties.
  • May collect waste from all areas of hospital, sanitizes all garbage cans, and keeps compactor area sanitized.
  • May collect or distribute soiled or clean linen.
  • May collect hazardous waste and dispose of according to department policies.
  • Arranges furniture for meetings, workshops, and community affairs.
  • Deals with patients of all ages: neonatal, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
  • Must be physically fit to perform job requirements at all times, i.e. back problems where floor washing or bed moving, or floor buffing cannot be accomplished.
  • Deals with patients and visitors on a friendly basis. Conversations must be limited to nonpersonal subjects and of short term. Must always show a positive attitude to cheer a patient or visitor as well.
  • In absence of the Supervisor, plans work areas according to importance.
  • Is responsible for trying out new floor equipment and evaluating new products for floor care.
  • Strips and applies floor finishes to meet our desired look. Buffs on a regular basis to assure this continued Gloss.
  • Locks doors after completed work and maintains security measures.
  • Attends training and meetings. Actively trains others in proper floor care.
  • May be required to work days, evenings, nights or weekends when need arises.
  • Changes curtains, draperies, and cubicle curtains as assigned.
  • Dust-mops floors and wet-mops floors.
  • High-dusts vents, cabinets, and other furnishings.
  • Shampoos furniture, carpets and rugs.
  • Wears protective clothing in Surgery, Isolation, or other areas as necessary.
  • Cleans morgue, delivery, birthing and regular patient rooms as directed.
  • When providing maintenance coverage, the following may be included:
  • Repairs for maintenance department.
  • Assists or covers for maintenance with unruly patients, run-aways, patient moves, and with visitors who will need to be removed.
  • Performs security patrols to ensure facility and grounds are safe from fire, vandalism, and theft.
  • Assists in Codes (99, 55, I, II, D) when asked.

Working Conditions

Standing all day, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 80 lbs. and working daily with chemicals and hazardous waste.

Job Descriptions

High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to read write, and follow written or oral instructions.

Three to six months of on-the-job and/or related experience are normally sufficient.
