The Academic Advisor supports undergraduate student success in the College of Education and Human Development by managing critical processes, programs, and initiatives related to recruitment and student services. The main responsibilities for this position fall into four categories: 1) providing direct academic advising services; 2) supporting communications and events management related to student recruitment; 3) maintaining critical enrollment management processes and related reporting; and 4) prioritizing and providing responses to requests for support from students, faculty, staff, or administration during the absence of other professional staff and/or academic administrators working within the undergraduate and teacher education area of the College of Education and Human Development. Typical hiring range for this position is $40,000 - $44,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ADVISING:

  • Provides direct advising to students in one-on-one and group advising settings.
  • Responds to student emails, phone calls, social media, and text messages about advising and other scheduling matters.
  • Manages an advising caseload as assigned by the Director of Undergraduate Advising and Success Programs.
  • Teaches one or more sections of first-year seminar

RECRUITMENT:

  • Provides timely response to inquiries and/or concerns from prospective and current students, families of prospective and current students; and other members of the community. Redirects inquiries and/or concerns as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and provides staffing for events related to recruitment and/or admissions efforts– including (but not limited to): open houses, prospective student visits, accepted student days, and alumni and/or parents weekends.
  • Utilizes established and emerging social media platforms to communicate information about the College of Education and Human Development to prospective and current students, families of prospective and current students; and other members of the community. Maintain accounts or sub-accounts for social media platforms as assigned.
  • Provides support for communications efforts related to student recruitment.
  • Adheres to brand, communications, and marketing guidelines established by the College of Education and Human Development and/or the University of Maine.

ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT:

  • Works collaboratively with staff, faculty, and/or administrators to address issues related to student records and/or enrollment.
  • Ensure student records are maintained in a manner consistent with practices established by the Office of Student Records.
  • Working under procedures established by the Executive Director of Educator Preparation and Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Student Success, review and provide preliminary verification of student completion of graduation and/or licensure requirements. Assist in the creation, formatting, and cleaning of data and/or files required for graduation and/or licensure requirements.
  • Supports enrollment growth and diversification in undergraduate programs
  • Serves as the College’s primary point-of-contact for the University’s Office of Student Records, Enrollment Management, Bursar’s Office, and Financial Aid areas
  • Leads College planning for new student orientation

OTHER:

  • Acts as advisor to Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education.
  • Serves as the initial point of contact of for a wide-range of communications from students, faculty, staff, or administration; responds to these communications or redirects them to the appropriate person(s) based on established practice / procedure in the undergraduate and teacher education area of the College of Education and Human Development
  • Maintains cross-training required for response to basic inquiries and/or support needs typically addressed by other professional staff and/or academic administrators working within the undergraduate and teacher education area of the College of Education and Human Development; during the absence of these professional staff and/or academic administrators prioritizes requests for support– responding to or redirecting these requests as appropriate
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field and at least one years’ experience advising at the college level -or- Master’s Degree in relevant field
  • Excellent oral and written communication and computer skills is required
  • Experience in the use of data information systems as resources for advising preferred
  • Knowledge of courses, programs, and support services on the University of Maine campus preferred
  • Knowledge of University policies pertaining to student records preferred
  • Knowledge of MaineStreet processes and functions preferred

*Work Schedule: *Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Due to the nature of the position, work beyond regular hours (to include evenings and weekends) may at times be necessary to meet the requirements of the position. The employee shall establish regular office hours and in consultation with the supervisor, adjust the work schedule as appropriate.

*Work Year: * Full-time, 11-month work year with one month off between June 1 and September 1.
